American Society of Perfumers

The American Society of Perfumers, Inc. (ASP) is a non-profit organization, founded in 1947, with a current membership of approximately three hundred qualified perfumers.  The ASP has officers and a Board of Directors, who are nominated and voted into office by the membership to uphold the Bylaws and provide a vision for the future.

The main goal of the ASP is to foster and encourage the art and science of perfumery in the United States and to represent our community internationally. This is accomplished by promoting professional exchange with a high standard of conduct within the fragrance industry.  Achieving these goals happens through multiple channels, networking and select events as well as co-sponsoring and developing co-relationships with other organizations. Through these avenues we provide a forum where leading members of the fragrance community have the opportunity to speak and present information on all aspects of the industry.

Historically, we have held iconic industry events that ranged from the NY Perfumery Symposium held annually until 2013 to the PCA Award ceremonies providing acknowledgement of great work in our profession.  Many perfumers, noteworthy individuals, fine fragrance creations, new consumer products, and corporations in the fragrance world have been recognized for their individual contribution to the industry.

That spirit of community and acknowledgement still survives today In our new experiential events promoting creativity and inspiration within the art of perfumery.

Creative exchange exposés are held at regular intervals promoting and benefiting our membership thru exposure and inspiration. The ASP also sponsors charity events as a means of giving back to those in need an important part of a culture of creativity.

Our premier event the World Perfumery Congress is held every two years.  This global event brings together perfumers, industry titans, fragrance icons and new concepts of fragrance for the future.  Formerly held in Cannes, France we now hold the event in multiple locations around world alternating between Europe and the United States.  Our event partner Perfumer & Flavorist - Allured Publishing brings a high level of professionalism and direction providing a focus on industry trends and opportunities. Our next WPC will be in Miami, Florida at the Fontaine Bleau Resort - June 13-15, 2016

The ASP brings together a group of specialized professionals who work in a very unique and challenging industry.  The members lend each other support and a special brand of camaraderie.  Knowledge that can sometimes only be learned through time and experience has been passed down from the charter members of 1947 to the current members.   By these means this specialized and time honored expertise will be passed on to generations of perfumers yet to come, preserving our professions and industry for future generations.

What is a Perfumer?

Perfumers are trained professional who create fragrances for a multitude of products. Artistic as well as scientific, perfumers study long hours and many years to achieve the sensitive balance required to create just the right scents.

The training process to become a perfumer is intense, rigorous and lengthy. The first task for a trainee perfumer is to study hundreds of natural and synthetic materials, memorizing them according to their specific odor and category. Once a mastery of this olfactory memory is attained, one must be able to create both simple and complex fragrance accords. By combining, balancing and blending these raw materials in memorable and unique ways, new fragrances are developed. Much like a musician working with notes and chords, infinite possibilities can be expressed.

There are many important aspects to perfumery training, but it is the art of incorporating these unique fragrances into various consumer products that is paramount. The variety of products is wide and expansive. It ranges from alcohol perfumery for colognes and perfumes, to various base perfumeries for shampoos, lotions, soap bar, liquid soap, laundry products and candles.
Ideally, a master perfumer can achieve proficiency in all media; however, reality dictates distinct specialization in the profession today. Usually modern day perfumers aspire to particular genre through their proficiencies in the different segments. Fine Fragrance, Personal Care and Household perfumery being the main focuses today.
